Ok I want to start this topic and see if there is any possible way to get communication with people at ONDA and try convince them to do the right and legal thing and release their kernel source. Android is under a open-source license so it is actually entirely legal and our right to have access to the source code. Everything done by google is available all the cool custom roms are out there carbon CM MIUI ext the AOSP is a massive success and the only thing needed is for hardware manufacturers like onda to release their kernel source. Most of which is hardly propriety lets be honest here they not exactly market leaders in this field so they really have nothing to loose and everything to gain and I think they can be convinced of this!
Judging by the current performance of their kernel onda only stands to gain by releasing this the open source community can probably do a better job debugging their code than they can - scary but true.
So I am suggesting 3 simple goals.
1) Establish communication with ONDA (for this we will need someone who speaks fluent Chinese (mandarin) and English. Ideally someone located in China would be highly useful.
2) Request that they release their kernel source code for their tablet. We should have persistence with this often if you ask someone to do something a lot of times they will do it simply to get rid of the nagging person. Ideally this won't be the case and they will do it because its the right thing to do and they could benefit and learn from the experience. Hell I mean they are using an open-source operating system they half way there they just need to embrace the philosophy and there is no harm in asking.
3) Finally if we can get the kernel source release we should pledge to buy a tablet for a good developer on XDA- who can port some of the cool roms like carbon CM or MIUI to our device. (I will happily donate to such a fund if we can get the kernel source). This shouldn't be to hard if we get 100 ppl to donate a $2 its done.
The only difficult part is establishing communication with onda. I suspect if we can get a collaborator in China they could look them up or better yet visit the company and speak with someone in person.
I think a lot can be achieved with simple communication and there is no harm in trying. I would attempt it myself but cannot speak mandarin, and live in South Africa. If we can achieve these 3 goals we would have a really awesome tablet.
